Today I present to you an extremely rare audio document, specifically one of the earliest collaborations between the band and the amazing Lance Diamond. In 1989 the Goo Goo Dolls teamed up with the Buffalo, NY singer to record two songs for a Christmas compilation. They performed the song “Do You Believe?” and a cover of The Temptations, “My Girl“. While the latter was obviously not written by them, I am not 100% sure about the former, that is whether it was original material they wrote themselves or another cover. I did some research online and came up with no answer.

I’ll Be There For You (The Rembrandts Cover)
In 1996 the Goo Goo Dolls were featured in a compilation titled “The Shredd -n- Ragan TV Theme CD”, which contained cover songs of TV opening themes. It was only distributed and sold in Buffalo, NY. for charity purposes. Among the other collaborators, we can also find their longtime friend Lance Diamond.

We all know the story. The Goo Goo Dolls’ front man John Rzeznik had been a huge fan of The Replacements for a long time. If memory serves well, they even opened for them in a few occasions before 1992. The band wrote the demo for “We Are The Normal“, just the rough, instrumental version of it, and sent it via regular mail to Paul Westerberg, the lead singer. He wrote the lyrics for it and sent the material back to the Goo’s.
