A Collection Of Magazine Covers And An Article About Johnny’s High School Years

Today we publish numerous pictures forwarded to us by contributor Bailey. Among them, also a reference to a release which will be issued in mere days from now.

Bailey also included comments for every picture she sent our way. I will simply let her do the talking, and invite all the readers to thank her for her precious contributions.

Hello again!
I have some more rare goo to share today, focused on pictures and an article.
As I’m sure a lot of fellow gooers know at this point, I’m a picture collector. I also like to show off my collections in video tributes on my Youtube channel and with Temple Of Goo. Well, today’s another sharing pictures day.
Before I share any magazine covers, I would like to put a little spotlight on a single picture (via, Getty Images). It features Rzeznik playing an acoustic guitar in red lighting. Now, I was looking at it the other day, and the caption reads something along the lines of “John Rzeznik of The Goo Goo Dolls performing at The Academy in New York, 1995”. What caught my attention was the obvious: “The Academy”. The Dolls are releasing their live album in a matter of days, and that’s where it takes place. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I like to picture what’s going on during a live show, when it’s just audio. Now we get a little bit of a visual. This may have been during the soundcheck, where the band performs a short unplugged performance for the crowd. All we can do is guess here, but this makes me even more excited for the upcoming date! (I’m already on the pre-order list for the CDs!)

Alright, now I’ve got my collection of magazine covers:
The first one is from ’02, called “Goo Goo Dolls come flying back with Gutterflower”. I do have part of the article with this one, but it’s not attached in order. That article talks about the new album as well as the plane crash the Goos got themselves in back in late ’99. John talks about how he got over his fear of flying, etc. Also just a side note here, if anyone has any of these articles, I’d love to see them!

The second one is of all three goos again. This one was titled “The Goo Goo Dolls – Sliding Home”, which I think may have been a promotional article on the single “Slide”. I don’t have the article to this one, but like I mentioned above, I would love to see it! (This was issued sometime in ’98)

The third one features Mike on Modern Drummer. I think this was the June ’02 issue (sorry if I got dates wrong there) and talks about the release of Gutterflower just a couple months prior. I do actually have the article on that one, at least most of it. It’s also not in order, but it features a picture of John in a Ramones shirt. The article talks about how Mike recorded the drums for GF in just three days! And John talks about how incredible of a drummer Mike is, etc.

The next one features John singing, and is from a magazine called “The inside connection”. I’m not even sure this was a while magazine article, but it looked like one, so I’m adding it to the collection. My assumption is that this interview was about the Goo Goos newfound success in either “Name” or DUTG. This looks like it was issued circa 1998 or ’99.

The next one is also an interview with Johnny. It looks like it’s from Buffalo, and might have featured things about the live performance at Shea’s they did at the end of ’99. (Would love to see the interview and the show, if anyone has it!)

The next one seems a little mysterious, since I have nothing more to it than just the cover. John is in what looks like a snakeskin compression shirt, and it says “John Rzeznik of The Goo Goo Dolls on why he likes strong woman and why he can’t go back home”. This is a long shot, but maybe it mentions something about Laurie? Like I said, this is all I have of that one, so there’s not much I know. It looks like it was from ’99 or ’00.

The next one is an article done for “Guitar World Acoustic” in 2002. It’s obviously about the (then) new album, Gutterflower, hence the title “Goo Goo Dolls, Gutter Power”. I unfortunately don’t have the article for that one either.

TEMPLE OF GOO NOTE: Apparently, John Rzeznik did perform with Chris Isaak (an artist also included in the aforementioned magazine) sometime in 2002 or 2003. The duo sang together one of Isaak’s songs. If you have this performance, on video or even audio only, and feel like sharing it, please consider contacting us. It is quite rare.

The next one was quite the random find for me. I stumbled across it one day, but I have no idea where it was from. According to the source, it’s a very rare article. The picture is cut off, but its something from “Entertainment Weekly” called “The Island Ear” and is titled “Now you know their ‘Name'”. This may have also been about Name, or the new release (at the time) Dizzy Up The Girl. This looks like it was printed around ’98.

This next one is for Javier :). It’s the February 1999 issue of Guitar One, the article titled “Oozing Goo”. It’s another interview with Johnny, of which I don’t have, sadly. I know this wasn’t the article Javier was looking for, but it’s another one from that era. (I think you found the one he was looking for, not sure).

The last magazine cover is of the Dolls in ’96, about “finding a ‘Name’ For themselves”. This was about their newest release “A Boy Named Goo”. I think Temple Of Goo has this posted somewhere probably in higher quality than this one is, but I thought I’d share it just in case.

Those are all the magazine covers I have to share today. I’m sure I’ve shared others in the past, so I don’t need to show them again. Now I have one last thing to share: The article about John’s high school years. This article (or clip of one, at least) was one I’d been looking for for a long time. I think it was featured in a magazine somewhere (circa ’99) but I don’t know where. This featured talk about John’s vocational high school, McKinley High in his hometown of Buffalo New York. He explains some of the reasons he didn’t like high school, and why he liked to skip. This kind of ties into this one article I read on temple of goo one time, where John explains getting bullied by some of the other kids. In this article, it’s because of his grades. We also get a little explanation on becoming a Plummer, which he obviously scrapped. I heard somewhere that this didn’t completely go away though. He apparently fixed a toilet for his sister back during the ABNG era. The person who put together the page also put more captions under the other pictures. I’ve seen both of his teenage pictures before, and have also shared them with Temple Of Goo. Under his high school picture is says he always had a girlfriend but never looked happy. I can make a lot of speculations there, but it could simply be the fact that it was a school picture. It says it was his junior picture, but on the date I found that yearbook picture, it was actually his sophomore one. There was also a caption saying “wearing overalls probably didn’t improve Johnny reject status”. Which now that I think about it, he did used to wear overalls a lot when he was younger. Maybe this is just my opinion here, but I think he looked pretty good in overalls.

That’s all I have to say on that, but I’ll leave you to enjoy these pictures yourselves!

Stay gooey!
