Robby Takac Interview (March 30th, 1993)

Here is an extremely rare, exclusive interview from my favorite Goo Goo Dolls era, the “Superstar Car Wash” one.

I don’t have plenty of information about this fantastic content. All I know is that the interview took place on March 30th, 1993 in Buffalo, NY. It features the interviewers (a local guy and his friend) and the interviewee (Robby Takac). Apparently, it was recorded for a local radio station.

This is a very interesting piece of Goo history presented in its raw form. The band had released their forth effort merely one month before this document was created. It’s an in-depth look at the band members’ mentality and visions of the time, during the weeks whereby euphoria and expectations were very high. Like I mentioned before, there was a lot of positivity just before and after the release of “Superstar Car Wash”, as it was being considered the one effort which would have offered them plenty of attention and recognition. Things turned out differently, even badly for former drummer George Tutuska, until the next album finally granted some fixated eyes on their craftsmanship.

One interesting thing that’s being talked about here is Robby’s attempts at becoming a music producer, which date back to the late 1980’s. I know he did in fact produce and worked on technical studio duties before they made it big with “Dizzy Up The Girl”. Check this and this other entry for a list of his involvements as the wearer of the producer hat. The years 1990 to 1993 seem to have been quite busy for him on that front.

Another very interesting thing which comes out of this interview is that before their forth album was issued, the band did record two EP’s which were never released. One between “Jed” and “Hold Me Up” which featured three re-recorded songs from their first self-titled release, and another one which was recorded at a friend’s house featuring four undisclosed songs.

It is also mentioned many times how the band was desperate for money, and their willingness to sign any agreement which would somehow produce it.

Robby also affirms their interest in including a couple of cover songs on “Superstar Car Wash”, specifically for “Next To You” and “867-5309 Jenny“, but plans were scrapped as they decided they wanted to put out a record only with songs written by themselves.

Furthermore, they briefly talk about the songs “22 Seconds” and “Two Days In February“, and it is stated that they were both written by John for a Californian girl he was dating at the time.

  1. That interview is really interesting. It’s cool how they were going to release two EPs. Who knows? Maybe someday they’ll decide to release them for all the true Goo fans out there. I’d like to see what they’re all about. Man though Robby is such a genuine guy! When they asked him why he likes to go barefeet, he admitted that he actually had stepped on glass before! Also it was funny when the interviewers asked him why Johnny got his “bon jovi haircut”. he said something about how John always wants to look like someone. Gotta love Robby Takac!
