This concert is an important one, because in a way it changed how people looked at the Goo Goo Dolls. What do I mean by that?
After falling into depression due to marriage problems and the looming, apparently unsolvable writer’s block afflicting John Rzeznik for several months in 1997/1998, the latter was not feeling much confident about the material being demoed for “Dizzy Up The Girl”. This is mentioned in the VH1 Documentary a couple of times.
Both John and the band pushed through those difficult times and produced the album, completing it. Now, it was time to put it to test. Labels are the first in line to listen to a finished album, then it’s fans’ turn to give out the final verdict. On August 15th, 2018, the Goo Goo Dolls introduced five new songs to the audience, including the one that will change their lives: “Iris“. It was time to face the demons once again, and see what the people out there thought about their latest effort.
YouTube user Johnny GooGoo recently uploaded this very relevant performance, one that in a way fundamentally changed how the world looked at the band, especially in terms of songwriting potential. Here, we get to experience the first time the following songs were played:
- Slide
- Dizzy
- Full Forever
- Brodway
- Iris
Four of them became official singles in 1998/1999.
