Live At The Coconut Teaszer, Los Angeles, CA (1990)

You know you were waiting for it… Another Sean Hampson release just fresh off the press.

As a reminder, Mr. Hampson has been collaborating with Temple Of Goo for a while now. He is the provider of numerous rare shows, mostly focusing on the early Goo era spanning from 1987 to 1995. Don’t forget to browse his own dedicated Category to keep track of what he has been forwarding us.

The show which took place at the Coconut Teaszer (or maybe Teaser?) in Los Angeles CA, on February 15th, 1990 was a peculiar one because the band introduced for the first time two brand-new songs (at the time) from their upcoming third release, “Hold Me Up”. Specifically, “Laughing” and “Know My Name“. As far as the former is concerned, the Goo Goo Dolls wanted to release it as an official single, and even a video for it was shot. Ultimately, It’s pretty clear plans were scrapped and “There You Are” became the only song aired both as a single and music video.

Let’s quickly analyze what’s interesting about this material:

  • As aforementioned, two new “Hold Me Up” songs were introduced to the audience for the first time
  • Love Dolls” is the opener and you should listen to it. I don’t want to spoil it for you
  • The Incredible Lance Diamond appears and joins the band on stage for the last five songs
  • Speaking of the latter, they are all covers: “Never Take The Place Of Your Man” (Prince), “Hey You” (Bachman-Turner Overdrive), “My Girl” (The Temptations), “Down On The Corner” (Creedence Clearwater Revival), and lastly “Blues In The Key Of G” (Not sure about the original artist for this one)

In terms of audio quality, things are a bit rough here. Nevertheless, we are dealing with an extremely rare performance which only a few Goo fans are in possession of. Until a better sounding release leaks, enjoy it for what it is.

Once again, you should thank Mr. Sean for his involvement. The concert can be streamed below. Download links are provided at the end of this post.

EDIT: Contributor Bailey shared a YouTube link actually featuring the live performance for this concert. You can watch it below. Originally shared by user Ted. One of the comments offers a nice trivia from it as well:

RIP Lance Diamond. Lance flew and paid his own way from Buffalo to Los Angeles to play 5 songs with the Goo Goo Dolls at the Coconut Teaszer. There were about 7 bands on the bill, they all shared the same drum kit and were supposed to play their 30 min set and be off. The club was packed and everyone was there to see the Goo Goo Dolls. The Goo didn’t know they had to play such a short set, so when the soundguy announced that they had to leave, they brought up Lance to do 5 songs and kept playing. This was one of the “Two Days In February” and one of the only videos of Lance that exists with him playing so many songs with the Goo. He also played with them at Club Lingerie about a year later and the Bachannal in San Diego. Club Lingerie was filmed professionally by the club, but someone from Warner Bros has that tape and it has never been released. I don’t even know if it exists anymore.
