When it comes to the song “Broadway“, the Goo Goo Dolls always give their best in terms of live performance. This time, they surpassed themselves.
“Broadway” appears in their breakthrough album “Dizzy Up The Girl”. Not too many people know that the song was actually not written for it, but it was instead crafted for their previous album “A Boy Named Goo”. In 1994, John showed up in the studio with two tunes he had recently written, presenting them to Lou Giordano, the Boston producer who worked on the 1995 release. The two songs were “Name” and “Broadway“. Ultimately, the band decided to record the former (wide decision) and shelved the latter. A couple of years pass by, and “Broadway” was unearthed for the “Dizzy” project.
I’ve heard several live versions for it, but the one I am publishing today takes the prize. This is, hands down, the best execution I’ve ever experienced. You can find it in their “Waiting For The Rest Of It” EP, which was sold in 2010 only at their concerts. The EP featured four new songs from the then-upcoming album “Something For The Rest Of Us”, plus this live take of “Broadway“.
