We have another amazing release from Mr. Sean Hampson. In fact, this one is probably the most famous performance from the “Superstar Car Wash” tour which took place in 1993.
Firstly, make sure to check Sean’s other releases by clicking here, in case you missed some.
1993 was a very particular year for the Goo Goo Dolls. Not only they released what I consider to be their masterpiece album, but the label they were under also decided that their then-latest effort was worth a wider promotion than their previous efforts… throughout the USA… and beyond. Not many people know that “A Boy Named Goo” was not the first album which offered the band the chance to spread their music through oversea performances. Before that, the band had booked an European tour for “Superstar Car Wash”, which began in the summer of 1993 in Belgium. However, it didn’t last long. After a few concerts in mainly empty pubs, the band was recalled to their native Buffalo, NY.
Anyway, the Metro show in Chicago, IL, took place months before that sad event, specifically on April 30th, 1993. Like I mentioned above, this is probably THE most famous concert for that era. What stands out here is their energetic performance and reinvigorated self-confidence after a number of big networks, including MTV, had added mere weeks earlier “We Are The Normal” to their daily rotations, consequently causing more and more radio shows (and people) to get interested in the band.
The Metro show was then a turning point for the tour, as the band kept on getting more and more attention, hence an increasing number of people became attending to their performances. In sum, it was a small taste of bigger audiences, which came roughly two years later thanks to the single “Name“.
The version Sean provided me with is actually missing three songs. If you want to watch a complete variation of it, YouTube user JBTV Music Television has already uploaded all of the songs. Check the playlist linked below for JBTV’s version.
Sean’s release does not feature the last three songs that were played (“There You Are“, “Girl Right Next To Me“, and “Don’t Fear The Reaper“). That is because the Canadian network he recorded it from simply cut off the broadcast before those songs were streamed.
In terms of quality, very good indeed. This is obviously a VHS rip (analog-to-digital) coming with the audio/video encoding standards it’s supposed to come with.
Below are the covers Sean personally created for the show. Notice that info for the 1987 Club Hell concert is also included because he had the two shows in the same VHS cassette.

Again, you want to thank Sean for this material. I simply make it publicly available. Furthermore, you want to stay tuned as he has more 1993 concerts coming in soon.
You can listen to the concert below. Download links are available at the end of the post.
PLEASE NOTICE: I have included the four parts Sean sent me, along with a full, longer file featuring the entire performance. I did it as a way to preserve the original material as much as possible. On the longer version you may experience audio/video sync errors at the points of conjunction between the different parts. If there are, they usually last less than a second.
EDIT: Unfortunately, due to a copyright notice, the video has been removed from YouTube.
