Live At Irving Plaza, NY (1993)

It’s that time of the week… the time for another Mr. Sean Hampson‘s release. Today, we share a Summer 1993 concert from the “Superstar Car Wash” tour.

Before we get into it, do not forget to check Sean’s previous material to make sure you’re up to date with the amazing stuff he’s been providing this blog with.

On June 3rd, 1993, the Goo Goo Dolls performed at the Irving Plaza in New York. (the setlist.fm entry features a wrong track listing). This is another great performance boosting a total of 21 songs and a running time of slightly more than 60 minutes. What stands out here is their execution for the cover song “867-5309 / Jenny“. Thanks to a recent post of ours, we know the band wanted to record a cover version of it for their fourth effort. They seemed to like it a lot, and have been playing it quite a few times during the 1990’s. I believe this concert shows off how the recorded song would have sounded. I get the sense this version is how it was intended to appear on “Superstar Car Wash”, and I speculate so because it sounds different than the other versions I’ve heard, that is more musically aligned with the album’s harmonic mood. In terms of audio quality, I think it’s pretty nice and overall quite clean. I’ve heard some reverb issues here and there, but again when it comes to bootlegs there are so many factors at play that it is almost impossible to obtain an almost-perfect recording of a given show.

As far as the last two songs are concerned, they began playing “Don’t Fear The Reaper“, interrupted it to execute “Jenny“, then opted to reprise the former to conclude the concert.
