Live At 9:30 Club Washington, DC (1993)

Mailbox just got filled up with one more Mr. Sean Hampson‘s jewel. This time, it’s another concert from the both great and unfortunate 1993 tour the Goo Goo Dolls did to promote their fourth album “Superstar Car Wash”.

As always, don’t forget to check Sean’s dedicated category to keep track of the stuff he’s been sending us. He’s got another 1993 concert coming up before he will be moving on to a different Goo era.

On April 9th, 1993 the band performed at the 9:30 Club Washington in the US Capital, DC. At that time they were touring with Soul Asylum. While the setlist entry I linked above is comprised of 22 songs (and also lists “Already There” and “Another Second Time Around“, which are not present here), Sean’s version has 18 simply because the last portion of the show has been merged within the last two songs. Total running time clocks in at about 54 minutes.

As far as the performance is concerned, the band plays the intro to “Sweet Home Alabama” (this is the first time I hear them doing that) along with another cover song they liked to play quite a lot during those years, that is “King Of The Road“. “Don’t Fear The Reaper” is interrupted by the former and the latter, before “Don’t Beat My Ass (With A Baseball Bat)” takes over and is interrupted again by a “Reaper” outro which concludes the show. So, yeah… I’m not sure why they would begin play a song, cut it off, begin another, cut that one too, and reprise the former. Maybe they were paying attention to the crowd’s reaction to those songs, and decided to move on to something else should people not seem to like it?

Either way, the concert in itself is great and comes with good quality as well. Check it out.
