Live At The Rat, Boston, MA (1989)

Here is a very interesting performance the band did to promote the release of their second effort, “Jed”. This is a very rare and unique concert.

First and foremost, I obtained this release from this Archive.org page. Thanks a lot to the original uploader for sharing with us this amazing old content.

On March 17th, 1989, the Goo Goo Dolls performed at The Rat in Boston, MA, one of the city’s most famous rock venues which unfortunately closed down in 1997 and was then demolished three years later. Apparently I couldn’t find an official setlist.fm entry for the show.

Needless to say, the band offered the crowd their usual energy and sarcasm which was one of their then-trademarks. On top of that, we also get to hear the band members talk quite a lot in-between songs, cracking a few jokes and interacting with the attendees, which I think it’s great.

What’s worth mentioning here is a couple of things:

  • A very cool and funny cover of “Space Cowboy” originally written by the Steve Miller Band
  • A near-perfect execution of “7th Of The Last Month“, which the band very rarely used to play back in the day

In terms of quality, I am amazed by the latter’s high standard. Despite its age, this recording is very clean and polished, and pretty well balanced. I noticed the mics tend to be a little lower on the mix here and there, but overall this is truly great digitization work by whoever converted the concert from analog to digital format.

All in all, a very memorable performance presented with high-quality audio traits and interesting content.
