Maximum Goo Goo Dolls: The Unauthorised Biography (2000)

Let’s open the history books to learn more about the band this blog celebrates. Today’s release is a very cool analysis of the Goo Goo Dolls’ past, from their origins, which took place all the way back in the mid 1980’s, to the breakthrough single “Iris” that granted the Buffalo, NY act a well-deserved worldwide success.

I couldn’t find much info about this CD, which was issued sometime in 2000 and it was presented as a non-official biography of the band. Apparently, it also included a mini poster within its packaging.

Listening to it, my interpretation is that this was likely produced in the UK, given the narrator’s British accent which can be clearly heard, and the fact that they used the word “Unauthorised” with a “s” instead of the American way of writing it, that is with a “z”.

The Goo Goo Dolls’ past was split into 11 main sections. Each one of them is narrated quite nicely, and we also get to listen to some of the comments made by John or Robby as the story unfolds. As far as the latter is concerned, they honestly don’t sound that good. I get the impression they were likely interviewed over the phone. Furthermore, they don’t even talk that much throughout the whole session.

This is probably a good way to introduce the band to someone who has only heard about them but has no deep knowledge, and was curious to know about what led the band into mainstream popularity. The information contained here, I’m sure, is something you’ve already read over and over again from other sources, including this very blog. Nevertheless, this is certainly good material for the collectors, and for those who want to spend roughly one hour listening to warm voices discussing how their favorite band came to be a worldwide sensation.

Needless to say, the tracks presented below are not songs, but simply the titles of the aforementioned “sections” which comprise this non-official biography.

This release is also the last one in my current, extremely long queue, which has provided all of you readers with plenty of content for more than one year. As I have explained here, from now on it is likely there will be extended periods of time in-between new stuff being published. Like I stated before, we are entering a slowdown mode and we will make stuff available when we get it, if we get it.

You can listen to the biography below. Download links are available at the end of this post.
