Only One (Live At MTV 120 Minutes, 1995)

The Goo Goo Dolls were certainly one of MTV 120 Minute‘s most admired bands during the Superstar Car Wash / A Boy Named Goo days. Today, we share a live performance of one of their hits which they recorded specifically for that show.

On July 2nd, 1995, MTV aired a 120 Minutes episode which in that occasion was hosted by Lewis Largent. The episode featured a number of live takes from different Indie Rock bands of the time. Among them, the Goo Goo Dolls were also present. The band performed the first single from their then-newest release, “Only One“.

Largent introduces the music act as one of his favorites, and mentions the fact that they had just hired a new drummer, though his name (Mike Malinin) had not been shared by the band. I think this reinforces the notion that after George Tutuska was fired, the Goos had indeed opted for Mike to join them at least for the album tour, however they were still unsure whether or not to stick around with him for the long term. We all know, in the end, Mike ended up as an official, stable member of the Goo Goo Dolls (until 2013).

We have already published some stuff from MTV 120 Minutes featuring the Buffalo, NY act.

This is a VHS rip coming with standardized SD characteristics (720x480p video size). Quality is overall quite good.
