One of our most active contributors Bailey shared with us today a 1999 photoshoot the band did during the “Dizzy Up The Girl” era, which features a total of 35 shots. I remember seeing some of these shots online a long time ago, whilst the rest is new to me.
On top of forwarding the material, which comes with surprisingly high resolutions for digital media created more than 20 years ago, Bailey also shares some opinions about the Q&A post we published a few days back (the Temple Of Goo Vs. Sean Hampson “fight”). We invite you all to read the aforementioned post and then Bailey’s thoughts as well.
Hey again!
Well, today I was thumbing around archived Goo Goo websites, and came across one from 1999 – what GooGooDolls.com used to look like during the DUTG era. Under the band members, we got a full photoshoot posted, all in pretty high definition. (Plus a few other pictures besides). Most of them are of John, but that was all that was posted. I have a few others from that photoshoot that I’ll attach as well, just so we can have a full collection in one place.
**Sorry if I put a couple of them twice, half of these were from my collection, and half from the Goo Goo website. All in all, I’d say this is a pretty solid collection, with most of the pictures being in high definition. If I find more, I will definitely be sending them to add to this! There’s not much to explain in this, since it’s all kind of just pictures taken from the same place. Well, there is a press kit from that photoshoot, taken maybe for the deluxe version they released to the UK and Europe in 1999, featuring “Name” as a bonus track (I accidentally have that CD—long story short, when I bought it, I didn’t look at what it said, and ended up with that CD). I used to have another press kit, but I couldn’t find it. Not to worry! I did find another picture (in lower definition unfortunately) that had been featured on the press kit. Robby and mike are standing to the side of John, who’s sitting in a chair. Just a little side note of my opinion on this, I kinda find it funny when Rob and Mike are standing next to each other because they’re like 8 inches apart in height!

After reading the Q&A post, below are Bailey’s thoughts about it:
I was reading the trivia questions between Sean and Temple Of Goo the other day, and was genuinely surprised at some of the thoughts shared. For one, I thought it was odd that Sean didn’t like Slide much at all, but really dug Iris. I mean, for some reason I always just figured he was against everything past “boy”. Plus, I really really liked your idea for a video for “On the lie”. Man, I love that song. The first time I listened to it, my first impression was that it was about a criminal maybe? And in the perspective of him for half the song, and John in the other. I could’ve been thinking it was in the perspective of the girl for the other half. I feel like that song is a little vague, but very angry. For some reason, the lines “and I never got serious/till everything went black” makes me think John was relating this to his childhood. He said that when he was in high school, he used to drink himself into unconsciousness multiple nights a week. Then he sings “and I ain’t so curious/that I’m every going back” which makes me think that since being sober, he realized he was a lot happier and didn’t want to live in that darkness anymore. Well, for however long that lasted…
I also really agree with Sean on “Just”. Actually, the week before that post was made, I just felt really inclined to that song for one reason or another. I especially like the part where John sings “you never get weak when I’m leaning hard on you” because I feel like that was a direct reference to Laurie. She was helping him through a lot right then, so I guess that was what he meant. (Don’t quote me on that) I also really really like the solo and the end when he’s singing “hold me up” with all that emotive and angst in his voice. I sat down one day and listened to it on high volume and that part gave me the chills. So yeah man, I agree that that is definitely a Goo Goo punk anthem!
I’m going to leave it at that today! Enjoy your pictures and stay gooey!
Thanks Bailey for your material and insights!
