Unreleased / VH1 BBQ (2022 Compilation)

Let’s spool our servers for a nice compilation which features some unreleased material, plus one of the most known “Dizzy Up The Girl” performances.

It’s finally time to share something “new” with our readers. Some of you may already know that we’re in Slow Down Mode. A blog like this one, aimed at pleasing a specific niche and mostly focused on old footage, sooner or later is fated to experience what I explained in the communication linked above.

Anyhow, “Unreleased / VH1 BBQ” is a recent acquisition of mine from one of my sources. What is it? Basically, a collection of a few rare Goo Goo Dolls songs (which already appear scattered around within our past releases) plus the full performance titled “Backyard BBQ“, which took place in 1999. You can stream the entire show below:

Many thanks to user Rolling Rockvideos who posted this amazing clip.

Don’t let the dates confuse you. The first five songs all come from different years (1992-????), whilst the VH1 BBQ concert is a 1999 one. The title of the compilation is tagged as a 2022 release simply because that is when it was assembled and shared.

Alright, let’s briefly discuss the Unreleased part of it:

  • Stand Alone” is the famous “A Boy Named Goo” outtake written by George Tutuska.
  • The “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” version included here is the one featuring only John on vocals, with missing lyrics replaced by “nah-nah-nah’s”.
  • A radio performance of “867-5309 Jenny“, a song they loved a lot during the early-to-mid 1990’s. Date is unknown for this one, most likely 1995.
  • A Thousand Words” is a never-released song which they used to play a lot in-between the end of the bridge of “Cuz You’re Gone” and the second part of the song. Nothing is known about it. I speculate it is a “Superstar Car Wash” outtake which at some point they wanted to include in the next release, but never did. For some reason, the band felt quite attached to it for a long time and has played it in numerous occasions. Even in this case, date is unknown. Only the song is present here, whereas the rest of the live take for “Cuz You’re Gone” has been cut out. EDIT: According to one of our readers, this version was taken from the Marine Midland Arena concert in ’96.
  • I’ll Be There For You” is a cover of one of the bands that has influenced them the most during their garage rock / alternative rock eras.

After those five tunes, we get the full VH1 BBQ performance. Not sure about the latter’s source. Could be the TV stream, or something else.

I don’t have anything else to add, besides stating that I know this may sound like a bit of a recycled release. Unfortunately, new stuff to share and add to our archive has been scarce for months, like I mentioned above. I renew my invitation to contact us if you have material which hasn’t been included in our blog yet, and would like to distribute it to other fans.

  1. That part of Cuz You’re Gone is from the Goos’ performance at Marine Midland Arena in ’96, there’s an entire bootleg circulating on YouTube
