Never-Seen-Before “Live In Alaska” Performance, 2002

Today we share some material which seems to be extremely rare, an outtake from the DVD “Live In Alaska”.

Contributor Bailey sent us an email with an attached YouTube video which caught us by surprise. In 2002 the Goo Goo Dolls visited various locations in Alaska and recorded unplugged versions of some of their hits. Those takes were collected and released under the title “Live In Alaska“. Overall, the band performed seven songs.

Bailey discovered there may be more takes which never saw the light of day. She found a fully edited version of “Sympathy” recorded for those sessions. Let’s hear it from her:

Hello, and Happy New Year! Hopefully we’re in for a good year…
So…today I stumbled upon this video—Sympathy, live in Alaska 2003. I’d never seen it before, but it was definitely professionally filmed. I didn’t ever remember seeing it on the full version, so this must have been an unaired song. Why didn’t they add this to the DVD? Who knows? It was a perfectly good performance, with nice beautiful scenery.

It’s got subtitles in Portuguese too, just a side note there

Posted by channel Goo Goo Dolls Brazil.

I did ask the channel if they still had the original film without subtitles, mostly because a) I don’t speak Portuguese and it gets a little annoying (at least to me)—and, I’ll let you Goo fans in on a little secret…I’m going to start making plans for a big 40th anniversary Goo Goo tribute, and that would be golden footage for it. I’m of course planning on including some of the amazing content Sean (as well as other contributors) have added to the Temple. So take it from me as well, if you’ve got some Goo that’s undiscovered, now’s the time to share it!

This has been a great year of discovery (in the Goo world, of course), and I hope next year is even better!
Stay Gooey!

It’s hard to say why this clip never made the final cut, and whether or not there is more. Maybe it was not included in the released versions of the DVD due to space constraints, maybe it was an online exclusivity only available through the band’s website… Who knows. All we can do for now is enjoy it.

Thanks Bailey for the precious find.
