Our new contributor Christina‘s first bootleg is a marvelous performance the Goo Goo Dolls did back in 1989, when their second effort “Jed” was released. This little jewel features a few interesting things that make it an amazing debut for our new official blog member.
On January 9th, 1989 the band played at the now-defunct club Siboney in the beautiful city of Toronto, ON. Christina has a few thoughts to share about this release:
A rough and rowdy one! This blog suggests the date could actually be September 1 and not January 9; but my file was labeled January so I’m going with that unless there’s evidence to the contrary.
There is some cool trivia on the blog linked above, and a few concerts which sadly come with broken download links (Tsk Tsk… Mirror guys, mirrors…). I encourage you all to check it out.
As far as the Toronto concert is concerned, we get some pretty good quality overall, despite the fact it was likely a crowd recording and not a soundboard one, and you also want to add on top of that the fact it was a 1989 event.
The shows features some interesting things which make it somewhat special:
- Apparently the band began the show by playing a cover for “Purple Rain“, but only the last few seconds of it are included here. Also, it has been tagged with a question mark, because we’re not 100% sure it actually is *that* song.
- The band performs “Laughing” and introduces it as a song the attendees have never heard before. According to setlist.fm, this is actually the concert they played it for the first time.
- A very nice take for “My Girl“.
- A live take for “7th Of The Last Month“, one of their very few instrumental songs which they only played few times in total.
All in all, this bootleg is indeed a great one, but moreover it represents a spectacular debut for our new contributor Christina, which we thank a lot for having decided to dedicate her time to the Temple Of Goo project.
You can listen to the concert below. Download links are available at the end of this post.
PLEASE NOTICE: You will be downloading .m4a files, which is one of the formats used by Apple. Most, if not all, of the players nowadays should be able to play it.
