It’s time to share another amazing release from contributor Christina. Albeit incomplete, today’s show is actually an amazing one, with top-notch performances from the band on a very special occasion.
On December 31st, 2002, the Goo Goo Dolls were invited at the House Of Blues in Chicago, IL. Needless to say, the event was the celebration of New Year’s Eve. The band was first timer at that venue, and they have returned there twice since that day.
As you can see from the setlist.fm entry for the concert, the show was packed with songs (twenty-one in total). Unfortunately, we only got access to a partial version of the performance, nonetheless it is a meaty one for a couple of reasons:
- High-quality performance with great audio ripping
- We also get interviews with the members of the band
Furthermore, this is another release we put out which features both audio and video separate content from the same concert, so fans can enjoy the event from two different perspectives.
There is more stuff to add, so I’ll just let Christina fill in all the remaining details:
Unfortunately this is a partial show. This sounds like a radio rip, so it’s possible the station only aired part of the gig. If the setlist on setlist.fm is correct, the missing songs are not sequential. “Black Balloon” and “Truth is a Whisper” are also completely out of order based on that setlist. Maybe someone out there has the missing songs and we can piece this one together…
As far as the video version is concerned, she has this to say:
To my surprise the first VHS tape I started to rip included a bunch of footage from the same show, aired on a Chicago FOX TV station. So here’s some info if you want to bundle the audio and video together for that gig when you get to it.
• The audio broadcast was aired on The Mix 101.9; a couple of their hosts are shown here interviewing the band and introducing the show.
• The interview clips before the gig are fun. I love Robby’s answer to who colors his hair, and his eternal advice to “question things that seem odd.”
• The audio recording does not convey the thousand balloons being dropped on the audience or the bra being placed on Robby’s head after the clock hits midnight. 🙂
• Video includes short interviews, Naked, Long Way Down, New Year’s countdown, Slide, Big Machine (partial), Dizzy (partial), Here is Gone, Black Balloon, and Think About Me (partial).
• The quality on this is not the best — as I’ve mentioned before, this is a second or third-generation tape, and it had some disruptions between the various interview clips which I’ve trimmed out as best I could without cutting anything relevant. The limitations of 480p video are also a lot more glaring on pro-shot footage like this, but it’s watchable. As for the show itself — the shambolic new year’s countdown is its own track which is rather charming. (“Everybody better be paired off! Okay? Or tripled off, or whatever, ya lucky bastards.”) There’s also, inexplicably, what sounds like a horse neighing at the end of the bridge of “Slide”. And “Truth” is always a gem to hear.
Like she stated, this is a VHS rip which comes with the standardized format for such medium (480p), and overall quality in my opinion is quite good. As far as the audio files are concerned, they are .MP3’s encoded at 160kbps, a bit below the acceptable (old) standard of 192kbps. Nevertheless, they do sound very good indeed.
I don’t have much to add, besides thanking Christina for her hard work in supporting the Temple. Expect more releases coming from this new marvelous contributor in the near future.
