The next release from contributor Christina is a peculiar one. Chronologically speaking, for the second time in his life, lead singer and guitarist John Rzeznik takes off the shoes of the musician and puts on those of the… TV host.
The List only ran for one season on VH1. The show itself, and here I quote IMDB, featured “four celebrity guests and a rotating celebrity host. The guests all present their top three choices on a musical topic. The choices are debated and choices are cut before a final list is determined by the studio audience.”
Christina wrote more about this whole endeavor. We previously shared the one featuring Robby Takac, where the latter appeared as a guest, though. Let’s see what she has to say about this other version, where only John is present as a member representing the Goo Goo Dolls:
I previously shared an episode of this talk show featuring Robby, so now it’s John’s turn. Instead of a fixed host VH1 would have various musicians, actors, etc. fill the moderator role, and John hosted a full week of episodes in 1999. These cover topics including “Best Rock & Roll Film” and “Sexiest Music Video.” There’s also a promo bumper featuring John that appears a few times throughout.
This is one of those shows that I think was intended to make you talk back at the TV, debating everybody’s choices. It is culturally of its time — I didn’t recognize several of the guests, and there’s the occasional comment that didn’t age well — but it’s an interesting time capsule.
Like Christina said, this was a whole week of show rather than a single episode. That is why each of the episodes he hosted have been named according to the topic at hand:
- Episode 1: Likely To Become A Legend
- Episode 2: Sexiest Music Video
- Episode 3: Best Rock Film
- Episode 4: Best Lead Guitarist
- Episode 5: Best Rebel Song
For the sake of simplicity, I merged all of the episodes into a single video, embedded below. However, please notice that Christina had ripped and created a different file for each episode. In the name of transparency, in the download section I included both the single five different files along with the bigger, unified one. With the help of a program which enables lossless merging or splitting of videos, the merged files were not encoded, but simply attached to each other. As a result, no quality loss has taken place whatsoever.
It’s imperative to notice that it looks like the shows are a bit cut off, especially at the beginning of each episode. Apparently whoever recorded these pressed the “REC” button a bit too late.
We promised a surprise for those who liked the “The List” series, and here we deliver it. Many thanks Christina for yet another amazing release.
