Today we share another full concert from the “Gutterflower” era, provided by our amazing contributor Christina.
On June 5th, 2002, the Goo Goo Dolls performed at the Palace Theatre in Albany, NY. This was another show packed with plenty of songs (a total of 22, for roughly 95 minutes of music), most of which came from the then-latest two album releases.
Christina has some thoughts about the release, which we can read below. The concert was a special event for her.
Okay, this one is already on YouTube… but I’m sending it anyway, one because the YouTube version is chopped into individual tracks and two, because the quality might be a marginal improvement.
This is a special gig for me as this was the first concert I ever attended, by any band — and I think it’s a pretty great one. 🙂 I would have been 14ish, so big shoutout to my mom for agreeing to bring me to this and many other Goo shows in my teenage years. It looks like I didn’t bring a camera to this show, but I did find my ticket stub (attached).
Quality-wise this is a pretty good audience recording. The person filming is up in the balcony with a decent view, and there aren’t too many disruptions.
The onstage banter goes a bit off the rails at times but it’s very amusing (the story about the “Gutterflower” girl punching them in the nuts lives in my head rent-free.) I also had no recollection of what happens in the last 10-ish seconds of this gig, but trust me, it’s funny and I wish the camera person moved the angle a bit so we could see the action better.
In terms of the file itself, this is obviously a VHS rip coming with the standardized video size for it (640x480p). Quality-wise, I’d say pretty watchable despite the general conditions it was filmed in (the middle of a huge crowd, by an amateur filmmaker).
I don’t have much to add besides mentioning that, like Christina said, from time to time we may post stuff in our blog which is already present on YouTube (thanks to user goozemell). The reasons why we do that is not because we want to redirect the platform’s viewers towards the Temple’s channel, but merely as a form of further preservation of stuff that was uploaded before we came, and which could disappear out of the blue without a backup copy already in place.
