Live From The Lounge With Ryan Seacrest (2002)

It’s been a while since we posted a full live show. Today’s concert comes from contributor Christina and it’s one of those releases that are interesting because not only it does offer music to listen to, but also access to the several points of view the band members have towards whichever given topic.

TV presenter Ryan Seacrest has done numerous radio programs throughout his career. One of them was “Live From The Lounge”, which aired on Star 98.7 (KYSR) – Los Angeles, and featured a typical studio settings whereby bands would play some of their classics and be interviewed in-between takes. I am not sure about the precise date for this one, but it certainly is a 2002 show. Christina has plenty of more info about the event:

This was a radio interview with “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, from his syndicated weekly radio program “Live from the Lounge.”

As I’ve noted on previous contributions, streaming quality in the early ‘00s was very limited – this is low quality with a tinny sound throughout, but it’s listenable. As an editing note, I’ve removed commercial breaks and trimmed any album tracks that aired in full during the show.

The highlights of this are the live acoustic performances of “Slide”, “Broadway,” “Smash”(!), and “Sympathy.”

The guys are in fine form here, under the influence of a few sake bombs, which they are keen to remind us about several times. Mike explains the time-honored tradition of cow tipping. John gives some book recommendations (“Cider House Rules” and “A Confederacy of Dunces”) for the readers out there. It’s a fun interview.

It’s true the overall listening experience may be somewhat affected by the low quality of the stream here, however I think it is worth listening to mainly because this material offers some nice insights into the minds of the Goo’s, a look at the kind of persons they really are behind the rockstar persona each member has to wear as part of the music business game.

Another thing I’ll mention is that Christina’s release is comprised of a single, long .MP3 file encoded at 128kbps. Consider that back then it was the standard for such format, before getting increased to 192kbps and lastly to 320kbps along the recent years. Given the fact the original source’s streaming quality was likely already lacking in the first place, I don’t think a different encoding process would have made that much of a difference anyway.

In terms of the show itself, like I said we get interview sections separated by live takes. The whole endeavor lasted for about 55 minutes. The song which ended up being played are those Christina mentioned above, so only four in total and all of them were acoustic takes.

We gladly add this concert to our archive as it represents a very good source of interesting trivia for those who like to focus not only on the Goo Goo Dolls’ music, but also on the ideas and worldviews that motivate the band’s journey.

  1. Thanks for sharing this cool find!

I sent you a couple emails with some super rare stuff if you want to check them out. Not sure if they went through because I sent them when I didn’t have internet. Can send them again if you need me to

  2. Confederacy of Dunces was a fun book. John used to talk about good books he was reading a lot. Old b&w films too. Wonder if he still reads
