Tell Me Something The AI Doesn’t Know

AI is making huge progress in pretty much every line of business, including the music industry. Today, we use it to remix a lost Goo Goo Dolls song.

This is just me experimenting with the latest AI technologies available to the public. I recently discovered a website which allows you to upload a snippet of a song, write your own lyrics, and then have the AI reinterpret the sample and sing it according to the words you provided to it. This is a very interesting and funny way to create a different, yet somewhat similar version of a given tune. Unfortunately, the AI will not perform the process if it recognizes the sample is already protected by a copyright. That is why, in order to play with it, I decided to use a sample from a non-copyrighted Goo Goo Dolls song which never made it past the demo sessions.

I’ve already written about “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know“, which appears in one of the many “Superstar Car Wash” demo sessions that leaked years ago. Below you can find the remix version created by the AI. I used the lyrics from the version which features both John and Robby on vocals, and I have pasted them below. Overall, I think the AI did a pretty good job recreating it. Obviously there are some substantial differences here and there, but it kept the general mood and musicality of the original demo.

I may be posting more AI-related stuff in the future, when I get a better understanding and confidence with this quite marvelous technology. Let me know what you think about the new, “remixed’, 2024 version of this lost Goo Goo Dolls cool tune sung by a robot.

I also included the original demo if you feel like comparing the two. The overall quality of the audio is a bit lacking because the AI simulates the same audio quality of the snippet, which in this case was a somewhat poorly recorded demo. A cleaner demo would have provided higher quality.

LYRICS:

Well the grass is so green
On the other side of town
And the kids are so mean
When there ain’t no one around

Tell me some kind of a way to make it right
Now I see, that it won’t happen over night
Is a dollar and a dream all you really got for me?

Well how much can I take?
Well I can’t take no more!
Can I hold myself up?
And I walk out the door

Tell me why I get no sleep at night
And I see, all that something just ain’t right
Is a dollar and a dream all you really got for me?

Tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Yeah, tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Make it fast so I can go
Oh tell me, tell me something I don’t know

What do you think of me now?
Do I see my place?
Did it hurt in my eyes?
And did it sting in my face?

Tell me some kind of a way to make it right
Now I see that it won’t happen over night
Is a dollar and a dream all you really got for me?

Tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Yeah, tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Yeah, tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Make it good so I can go
Oh tell me, tell me something I don’t know

Tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Yeah, tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Yeah, tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Yeah, tell me, tell me something I don’t know
Yeah, tell me…
