Time to dive back into the past with another “A Boy Named Goo” concert from contributor Ryne. This time we can enjoy a full video performance of the band playing in the state of Illinois.
On August 10th, 1996 the Goo Goo Dolls performed at the State Fairgrounds Grandstand in the city of Springfield. We have more info about the event coming straight from Ryne:
For the next release on my list, I bring you a Video/VHS Rip from the ‘Boy Named Goo’ tour. We’ve got the Illinois State Fairgrounds performance of 1996.
This show had a total of 16 songs performed. And I tell you, This particular show had some energy to it. Among the songs played was Cuz You’re Gone, Which by this point had 1000 words as part of it for a while.
You know the energy during this particular show must have been something else, When John just rips into 1000 words. Certainly the Energy got the Crowd hopping, As i think you will notice during the video.
Overall, The Video quality is Fair, I would say. Audio Quality is certainly better, If nothing else.
Otherwise, I hope you fellas enjoy this one. 🙂
The concert itself seems to be a pretty enjoyable one. I did experience some issues with the audio, as there is a consistent clicking sound in the background which reminded me of those noises coming out of old movie projectors in cinemas. Not sure if there were problems with the actual recording or something got mixed up during the encoding process. Either way, I found the overall performance to be quite good.
The track listing is basically made up of songs coming only from their then-latest two albums, with the only exception being “Million Miles Away“. Total running time is exactly one hour.
The file is your typical VHS rip coming with the standardized 640x480p encoding format. Like Ryne said, its quality is definitely watchable, considering it was shot from a distance and with old technology which is not really comparable to today’s standards.
This is certainly a nice addition to our ever-growing archive. Many thanks to Ryne for unearthing yet another gem.
You can watch the video below. Download links are available at the end of this post.

I’ll Admit, I did hear the ‘clicking’ sound too.
All i could think of was that: It was the sound of the VHS Tape of the recording Camcorder somehow being picked up in the Microphone.
That, I would say, Is truly how you know this is a VHS Rip.
