The next release from contributor Ryne is actually a single clip rather than a full performance. Back in 2005, the band played a live take for “Better Days” at a special Christmas event.
As “Let Love In” was nearing completion and ready to be issued weeks later, the Goo Goo Dolls delighted the audience with a live performance of what became one of its singles. Let’s get more info directly from Ryne:
For my next release, We’re giving you guys a video clip this time.
On November 30th, 2005, The GGDs played the song ‘Better Days’ in Rockefeller, NY. It was as part of Christmas in Rockefeller.
Better Days was the first single off of ‘Let Love In’, Which was set to be released a few months after this show had been recorded. And I think the song was originally meant to be a Christmas song, As John would himself say at one point. But then Hurricane Katrina happened, Then it sort of came a bit earlier than anticipated.
The Quality, At least for the video Itself, Will be a bit blurry at times. It was indicated to have been on the Internet for about 13 years when I picked it up, And obviously the recorded show is even older than that. You may see a ‘Videopimp’ logo appear early, That was in the video when i picked it up. Couldn’t really do anything about it from my perspective, Though it does seem to indicate how old the video is.
The Audio is still better by comparison, So i hope that part will make the video Watchable.
Hope you enjoy. 🙂
I don’t have much more to add. I think overall “Better Days” was a very good song which, I get the impression, did not really break through the charts of the time, for whatever reason. I remember a lot of fans comparing it to “Iris” (well, I don’t know… but I can see some resemblances here and there) and claiming it would end up being more detrimental to the Goo’s rather than beneficial. In a way, I think they were somewhat right. Did the audience end up not liking much the fact the band was trying to get another hit single with a melody that reminded a bit too much of their biggest hit? Maybe. In the end, “Let Love In” was a pretty OK album to me, though a bit too soft and “self-restricted” when compared to its predecessor.
Alright, enough with my analyses for it. The file itself is obviously a VHS rip encoded with the standardized 640x480p format. Like Ryne said, the video quality is a bit off sometimes but quite watchable in general. The rest seems nice.
