The next release from contributor Ryne is a 3-song collection of what (I think ?!?!) was a full concert the Goo Goo Dolls performed in Italy back in 1999.
We all know 1999 was a very busy year for the band, thanks to the worldwide success of “Dizzy Up The Girl”. Their label, obviously, pushed for the guys to also participate to music initiatives outside of the States. On June 19th, 1999 John et al. were in Italy, specifically at the Imola Circut, which is very famous for hosting Formula One races. Let’s hear what Ryne has to say about it:
Hey Fellas! Today (9/2) is my birthday! And my gift to you is a little show the GGDs put on back in 1999 during the ‘Dizzy Up The Girl’ Tour.
The Heineken Jammin’ Festival, Or so it was called. A few songs and interviews were featured in this video/VHS rip that I’m bringing you. I don’t know personally if the songs featured were truly the only ones, Or if there was actually more that were played offscreen but we only see what we’re getting.
Even the Setlist database isn’t always clear on that.
Anyway, The video itself comes with reasonable audio and visual quality, Though maybe a little on the low side for both. Still not bad, Even for 1999.
Hope you enjoy! π
As Ryne mentioned, only three songs are listed on the setlist.fm page linked above, the very same featured on the video as well. I am not sure whether or not the band actually played more during that event. I find it strange the organizers would have invited them just to play those three.
Speaking of the performance itself, I have a vivid memory of this assembled clip, which I remember watching on TV back in the day as it was streamed by MTV several times. A little something extra I was reminded while watching Ryne’s file was that, at a certain point (not included in his video), MTV was showing another band playing on stage (I think it was Guano Apes) and then they cut to an area in the backstage where some band members were eating. It was a green area, like a small park, filled with chairs and tables for musicians to sit back and enjoy lunch. As someone was being interview, I have a clear memory of spotting the Goo Goo Dolls in the background sitting at one of those tables, as they were busy putting some food into their stomachs. John (easily recognizable by his tattoos) was chugging beer cans like crazy, one after the other. I remember thinking: “Wow, that guy’s liver is made of steel”.
Anyhow, enough with my old memories. The video itself is obviously a VHS rip coming with the HD encoding format (1280x720p). Given the original medium it comes from, this was likely upscaled from its 640x480p format. On YouTube there is another version by user My World Life which can be streamed here. I didn’t notice any substantial differences between the two, so it’s likely we are dealing with the same thing. Anyhow, we add it to our archive because, like I wrote many times, two copies are better than one, for obvious reasons.
You can watch the video below. Download links are available at the end of this post.
TRACK LISTING:
- Slide
- Black Balloon

EDIT: Something weird is going on with YouTube’s embedding option in WordPress. If you can’t see the video embedded below or it doesn’t work, you can check it out by clicking here.
I can’t say i’ve noticed any embedding issues.
Then again i mainly focus on making sure links work, So i may not know for sure.
In terms of copies? That’s funny considering i looked around at the 1999 category and searched different terms, But it didn’t seem like this was already featured on the blog or anything.
Plus considering where i picked up the video (a different website), I couldn’t have been sure at the time.
oh I remember this! I remember seeing a setlist for a whole show one time but I went to look for it now and I canβt find it anywhere.
Man what you were saying about the MTV clip: doesnβt surprise me that John was drinking it up. Man just a few years earlier he was sobered up and I think Georgeβs firing really rattled him. Plus, you know how fame isβ¦John addresses this in Sympathy. For his sake Iβm really glad he quit. Being a teetotaler myself, I canβt imagine the effects, but being older and having a daughter and being an alcoholic wouldnβt be a good combination.
By the way, happy birthday Ryne! I probably have already said this but we share a birthday month! Mineβs on the 23! (And Robbyβs is on the 30th)
