Contributor Christina‘s latest batch is soon to be fully uploaded. Today we share her copy of a famous live cover the Goo Goo Dolls did back in 2001, for a just cause.
The song “American Girl” was originally written by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. It was one of those rare cases of a hit single straight off the debut release put out by a band. It quickly became one of the anthems of the USA, and has often been used in several contexts, including commercials and movies.
The Goo Goo Dolls were amongst those invited to perform at a live concert in honor of those who lost their lives during the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks. In that occasion they played “Iris” and a cover of the aforementioned song. Christina has more info about it:
Organized by Paul McCartney, this benefit show was done to honor the NYFD and NYPD in the aftermath of September 11. My copy of Iris has a glitch that makes it unsalvageable, but I have American Girl in decent quality. Both songs are on YouTube here
This was a very energetic performance which actually comes with very good audio/video quality, despite the fact it was ripped from a VHS source and coming with the standardized 640x480p encoding format for such medium.
The live take, fully produced and remastered, also appears on the “Volume 2” compilation released in 2008.

The sound and video quality are spectacular! I couldn’t help but stare mesmerized at this the first time I saw this because no one can ever find a video this good unless it’s released by the Dolls themselves!
