Live At Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Poughkeepsie, NY (2002)

We keep going with contributor Christina‘s releases and this time we’re finally back with a full concert from the “Gutterflower” era.

The archive section for the year 2002 is getting bigger and bigger indeed. Thanks to Christina, we can now more content to it. Specifically, a live concert which took place in New York as part of the “Gutterflower” tour.

The Goo Goo Dolls performed at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center on August 31st, 2002. Here we have a meaty 21-tune show which features the vast majority of the songs coming from the then-latest two albums. The track listing is typical of that era and the concert is concluded with a cover of “American Girl“, which the band used a lot as their shows’ final song those years.

Same video I posted to YouTube. I have no idea who filmed this; I obtained it in tape trading circles many, many years back so it’s a third generation copy at best. I probably have photos from this gig somewhere – I was actually there up front on Robby’s side, but I think I was too busy having fun to document much 🙂

The video itself comes with the standardized 640x480p encoding format typical of VHS rips. In terms of quality, I wouldn’t complain much about the video part, as it looks pretty OK to me. In the sound department there are issues though, resulting from the recording taking place in a very crowded section with a lot of background noises and muffled sounds all over the place. Listeners won’t have issues recognizing the songs being played, though the overall listening experience may not be as good as other releases. When it comes to home-made recordings, it is what it is.

Nonetheless, this is an amazing concert with great energy and even greater execution from John et al. It even begins in a bizarre way, I won’t spoil it for you and will just leave you with the discovering part. On another note, there are some pretty funny sketches made by John in-between takes. You might want to keep your eyes peeled for those.
