Stop The World (AI Covers)

Whether you like it or not, AI music is the future, and that future will be slapping us in our faces sooner than we think. Today, we experimented with the latest technologies to create a cover of one of the Goo Goo Dolls’ best songs that would have performed great if they had been turned into a single. And the AI covers sound, literally, as if they had been performed by real bands.

If you have been following our Official YouTube channel for the past few months, I’m sure you noticed that once in a while we like to experiment with AI. So far what we were able to do was remixing short Goo Goo Dolls songs. This is an example of such operation, or maybe you want to check out this one as well?

The technology we were using only allowed for songs shorter than 2 minutes to be remixed, and the workflow was basically using AI to first isolate the vocals from the instrumental part of the original song, remix the instrumental with another AI model, and then put back the original vocals on top of the remixed instrumental stem.

Today, thanks to a new competitor in town, we do something different and more amazing to the ears.

With the newest AI technology we are experimenting with it is now possible to have the AI cover an entire song. In the world of AI, Covering is different from Remixing:

  • Remixing: A song is slightly changed, the overall mood and style are kept but sound variations here and there are present
  • Covering: A virtual AI band takes on the full song, and they will interpret it in their own way. Just like a real band would cover a real song.

Needless to say, marvelous improvements have been made in the past months and now we can have AI reinterpret a full song in the way we want it to do it. The results are amazing, as you will be able to see for yourself. However, keep in mind that this technology is still in the beta testing phase, hence there are issues which will likely be resolved in the future. For instance, throughout some portions of the covered songs you might encounter some gibberish, or distortions in terms of sounds. Nevertheless, the outcomes are jaw-dropping in most cases.

We took the song “Stop The World” and applied AI covers to it for a total of seven covers. We tried to spice things up a little bit and covered the song in the Emo Rock, Folk Rock, Piano Rock, Pop and General Rock styles. Some of these covers are pretty close to the original take, but with their own melodic structure, others are quite diversified but they all try to somewhat stay true to the reference song.

As the AI technology progresses, for now let’s enjoy some “new” Goo Goo Dolls music as we await for the actual new album to come out this year. Courtesy of your robotic bands.
