We dove into our vast pictures gallery and brought back to life some of the oldest black-and-white photos of the band, revitalized thanks to Artificial Intelligence.
This is an experiment more than anything, but I guess it’s a cool one. I got access to some of the latest AI models which deal specifically with image editing, and I thought to myself that it would be nice to colorize some of those old Goo Goo Dolls pictures we had in our archive.
For whatever reason, not all of them could be processed by the models. Sometimes a photo would simply be rejected by the system. I guess it had to do with some sort of censorship mechanism within the models themselves. As a result, a few of them could not be processed.
Overall I think the AI did a pretty good job. Some pictures were restored in an almost perfect way, other ended up being good, and a very small percentage turned out OK-ish. In some instances, especially when then original size or the resolution of the image were small/low, the AI had to reinvent part of the photos, and applied some changes here and there, such as slightly modifying the face of the persons in it. Nothing too drastic, but if you pay attention to it you’ll see it’s there. In one specific case, the resolution was so low that the AI turned the picture into some sort of anime. Quite funny.
The best two models were used for the whole process: Nano (Google) and Seedream 4 (ByteDance).
Anyhow, I had fun generating these and that’s all that matter. I hope you will have some fun as well by (re)discovering them.
