Today we share a project we’ve worked on during the past few days. Using professional tools utilized by real audio engineers who work in the industry, we remastered a Goo Goo Dolls classic album. Did we do a good job? You decide.
As I wrote mere days ago, I recently got access to a couple of professional tools producers and audio engineers use when mixing / mastering songs. I learned the basics and then went on to experiment whenever I had spare time to do so. YouTube tutorials and AI chatbots have been very helpful in this complex journey.
In the end, I felt confident enough to try and remaster an entire album. I thought “Hold Me Up” was the perfect choice to put my newbie skills to practice.
The two pieces of software used for the remaster are Ozone 12 and RX Advanced 11. The former did the vast majority of the job, while the latter was utilized to clean up some parts of a given song when needed. As far as Ozone 12 is concerned, for those who are interested, below is a list of the module that were applied to the original recordings:
- Master Rebalance
- Equalizer 1
- Impact
- Imager
- Clarity
- Stabilizer
- Dynamic EQ
- Unlimiter
- Stem EQ
Ozone 12 did a lot of processing by mainly focusing on improving the overall audio quality, furthermore I also used some of the modules listed above to ameliorate vocals and drums, and to make the sound feel more open and wide to the ears. For vocals they should sound more prominent, and drums crispier.
Then, after the initial touches, the finishing ones were passed on to RX Advanced 11. The two more prominent modules that were used in many occasions were:
- De-clip
- Spectral de-noise
RX Advanced 11 helped a lot in terms of removing white noise in the background (an issue that does appear in plenty of old records, due to the equipment used back then) and to remove clips whenever present.
Enough with the technicalities. I encourage you to listen to the whole thing and let us know what you think. Keep in mind, this was the result of a process handled by someone who is still learning and by definition not comparable to real remasters, which are done by handling the actual, original analog recordings.
Nonetheless, we hope your ears will enjoy this revitalized Goo Goo Dolls masterpiece.
