MTV 120 Minutes short promo for “Superstar Car Wash”

Here is a very rare clip featuring the band doing a short promo video for their album “Superstar Car Wash”. This was shot on February 21st, 1993. They also make a brief introduction to their video for “There You Are“.

This is quite cool and extremely hard-to-find material which I recently discovered on YouTube. Originally posted here. The band cracks a few jokes, and we also get to see former drummer George Tutuska in a not-so-happy mood.

Enjoy it. Download links are also available below.

Superstar Car Wash Instrumental Demos (1992)

As I wrote in the past, there had been several Superstar Car Wash demo sessions which leaked online years ago. One of them featured a tape simply called “Instrumental Demos”. Such release was a 7-song studio take of some of the songs which ended up being included in the final 1993 album. Today I am sharing it with you.

Marvelous Sauce (Superstar Car Wash Demos, 1992)

In this old post of mine, I wrote about the various Superstar Car Wash demo sessions which had leaked online years ago. I recommend reading it before continuing any further.

To my knowledge, “Marvelous Sauce” is the most popular one, that is the most diffused one. I believe these demos were basically the final versions of the songs, before they went into the studio to record the album. Today, I want to share this release with you.

Next To You (The Police Cover), 1992

Just like their previous three albums, the Goo Goo Dolls wanted to include at least one cover song in their new release, 1993’s Superstar Car Wash. This time, they opted for “Next To You“, originally performed by The Police.

Tell Me Something I Don’t Know (Superstar Car Wash Demo)

Like I mentioned before, there are several Superstar Car Wash demo sessions which have been leaked throughout the years. A good number of them feature a song called “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know“. To my knowledge, this song comes in at least three different versions:

  1. An instrumental demo
  2. A rough version with a few lyrics sung only by John
  3. A final demo version with full lyrics, sung by both John and Robby

Paul Westerberg wrote the lyrics only for “We Are The Normal”… or did he?

We all know the story. The Goo Goo Dolls’ front man John Rzeznik had been a huge fan of The Replacements for a long time. If memory serves well, they even opened for them in a few occasions before 1992. The band wrote the demo for “We Are The Normal“, just the rough, instrumental version of it, and sent it via regular mail to Paul Westerberg, the lead singer. He wrote the lyrics for it and sent the material back to the Goo’s.
