“Superstar Car Wash” In-Store Release Concert. February 27th, 1993

Today I’m sharing a very rare video for all of the Superstar Car Wash aficionados out there. On February 27th, 1993 the band performed at a music store called New World Records in their hometown, Buffalo, NY. Five days earlier the album had officially been released. During the concert, we also get to know that very same day drummer George Tutuska was also celebrating his birthday, as suggested by Robby in a brief interval between songs.

This in-store concert worked as a way to promote the new release, whilst introducing some of the newest songs to the audience. It is a video I found on Youtube, and at the time I’m writing this it is still available. All praises go to Youtube user Bob Kazee who uploaded this amazing content first in 2017. I am very surprised with the quality of the recording, despite its old age. You can watch the full performance below. In case it will be taken down in the future, download links are also available at the end of this post.

So, what about it? It sounds great and video quality is your standard low-definition 480p. I speculate this was ripped straight from the original tape to a computer device and then digitalized, so it wouldn’t have made sense to encode it with a higher resolution, as 480p was basically its native format. The band cracks a few jokes in-between songs, and there is also a small brawl between John and some guy in the crowd who threw a small object at him. Overall, we get slightly more than 45 minutes of music, featuring brand-new songs from the album plus a few old, familiar tunes (at the time).

This is an amazing video, extremely rare, and it even comes at pretty great audio-visual quality. Thanks again to those who have digitized it and published it online.
