Stand Alone (A Boy Named Goo outtake)

Today I am sharing one of the rarest Goo Goo Dolls songs, which only appeared in an early advance copy of “A Boy Named Goo”.

As you can see from the pictures above, this advance copy was only sent out to radio stations and magazines as a way to promote the upcoming album. There are a few differences when compared to the final release, such as the song “Ain’t That Unusual” being named “Someday“, and “Eyes Wide Open” being the album’s last song. Song 11, “Stand Alone“, was written by George Tususka and only appears in this advance version. After he was fired from the band, another promo copy of the album was released, whereby the song had been taken out and replaced with two covers, “Disconnected” and “Slave Girl“.

Ultimately, the version with the two covers was kept as the official, final release. There is even a promo cassette that likely was issued before the version pictured above, unfortunately I could only find a low-resolution image for it, let’s take a look nonetheless.

In there, we can see an alternative version for “Long Way Down” (I’m not sure how this version would differ from the original one), and different titles for some of the songs:

  • Burnin’ Up” was titled simply “Burnin’
  • Name” was titled “Your Name
  • Somethin’ Bad” came without the apostrophe and the final letter “g”
  • Ain’t That Unusual” was titled “Someday

Stand Alone is a great song, I like it a lot. To me, it sounds more like a “Superstar Car Wash” outtake, at the same frequency as “Already There“. It is the only song we know for sure was written by George Tutuska. I encourage you to read this post of mine, where I talk about his real role in the band, which was not only that of the mere drummer.

Furthermore, I am also sharing an instrumental version of it. Be aware that the latter was actually created using AI algorithms, hence it is not the official version. Nevertheless, it sounds pretty great as the best stem-separation AI models were used on it.

You can listen to Stand Alone below. Download links are included at the end of this post.
