Live At The Green Bay, WI (February 8th, 1991)

Let’s add to this blog’s collection an amazing show from the “Hold Me Up” era, boosting a total of 16 songs and coming with superb (for its time) audio quality.

The Goo Goo Dolls performed at the Green Bay, WI, on February 7th, 1991. My understanding is that they were opening acts for The Replacements on their final tour, a band John has repeatedly admitted to be among his all-time favorites, and which lead singer wrote the lyrics for the 1993 hit “We Are The Normal“. Click here to check the other venues the Goo Goo Dolls played at, where they opened for The Replacements.

In terms of the show itself, we get a mixture of songs off of their then-latest release and the previous two. No unrecorded covers.

Quality-wise, I am surprised we are dealing with a very good analog-to-digital conversion here, making it clear whoever originally recorded this took great care in capturing the sounds in the best possible way for its time.

I am not sure if the setlist entry I linked above is actually correct or not. The version I have features 15 songs, but the website claims there were six more (“James Dean” plus another five after “No Way Out“). The band concludes “No Way Out” with Robby yelling “See you later”. I’m guessing there was a second, smaller part to the show which wasn’t recorded, maybe an encore. Either way, this is what I have for now, and this is what I can share.

You can listen to the concert below. Download links are provided at the end of this post.

PLEASE NOTICE: You will be downloading a single .mp3 file for the entire show, rather than a file per each song. This is how I got the release, and I decided not to split it or doctor it in any way, in order to preserve its original status.

  1. So depressing reading the set-lists on here, to then check out what they served up as recently as last night…

I do not understand the thought process behind playing songs like Rebel Beat. It wasn’t even a “hit”. Less said about the song itself the better.

I think this blog just highlights the Goo Goo Dolls are two distinctly different bands. This isn’t new information. But for people that worship the earlier records, it’s a pretty painful place to be in.

    1. I’ve always thought of them as two bands, and the July 04 buffalo show as a pretty accurate marker between the two. Something changed after that. I know alot of old fans from the Continental days feel the same. Its weird.

    2. Lol. Absolutely. Nice to know the old fans are still out there. I remember listening to an advanced copy of something for the rest of us and not even finishing it. What a bummer. If you haven’t checked it out already, Robby did an acoustic show during the pandemic and he played stuff like laughing, road to Salinas, and different light. Why they can’t even attempt to play stuff like that is beyond me.

  2. Yeah that little Robby set was mind blowing. There have been a few occasions I’m ngl where I have been baited into thinking they might return to their roots, or rediscover some of that old DNA, like when they took Beach Slang out on tour a few years ago (before Beach Slang got mired into all kinds of trouble) – I thought they would been influenced to rediscover some HMU/SSCW flavour which Beach Slang were clearly inspired by. But nah.

    1. I hear ya. Watching Johnny perform is so very different now. Kinda sad. Plus, he’s John now, not Johnny. Puh-lease! I know it’s been awhile since he changed that, but it reminded me of when Ricky Schroeder decided to be called Rick Schroeder. I mean, Come on! Lol!
