Mai Dire Gol TV Appearance (Italian Show, 1999)

Here comes one of the strangest, yet funniest TV appearance the Goo Goo Dolls ever participated to.

On January 31st, 1999, one of the many “Mai Dire Gol” episodes aired, and it featured all the members of the Buffalo, NY, band which had obtained worldwide fame mere months earlier thanks to the release of their single “Iris“.

Mai Dire Gol” (which translates to “Never Say Goal”) was an Italian show that became very popular in Italy in the 1990’s. It was focused on the world of soccer, and it made fun of the latter with a plethora of sketches and gaffes, featuring both clips taken from real games and fake personas that revolved around its universe. Numerous actors and actresses would interpret different roles within a given episode, from clumsy entrepreneurs who were somehow connected to the world of soccer, to improbable coaches and players who barely knew the subject but were treated as experts of the trade, to make a couple of examples.

Anyway, the Goo Goo Dolls were invited and they took part to what I think is probably the strangest TV appearance they ever made. Despite the fact they barely uttered a few words (apparently English was not even spoken by any of the hosts), they seemed to have enjoyed their brief stay on the show. There is plenty of talking in Italian here which I don’t understand, but my interpretation is that the hosts and the personas suddenly appearing from all angles were making fun of the name of the band. Lots of handshaking, which Italians seem to enjoy doing.

You can clearly notice how John, Robby, and Mike kept looking around trying to make sense of what was going on. In the end, we get to see John trying to improvise a small dance with one of the girls as his confusion kept on building on.

This is certainly a TV appearance you want to watch due to its funny and weird nature. The version I got is a VHS rip (analog-to-digital) with small video size (only 288p), whereas the standard is 480p. When will people learn? It is watchable, but far from a decent quality, in my opinion.
