MTV 120 Minutes Interview (April 18th, 1993)

Today I am sharing an extremely rare interview the band did on the MTV 120 Minutes show, dated April 18th, 1993.

Some time ago I posted a short clip the Goo Goo Dolls recorded with the network, mere weeks before this interview took place. In the other video, the goal was to briefly discuss the release of their fourth effort “Superstar Car Wash”. In this one, an extensive discussion with John, Robby, and George takes place as they were in the middle of their Spring tour to promote the aforementioned album.

First and foremost, I want to clarify that I took the video from YouTube user Lovers of 120 Minutes on MTV, who originally uploaded it for our viewing pleasure. You can watch their version by clicking here.

There are a number of topics being explorer in this amazing piece of Goo history, proposed by host Lewis Largent, such as:

  • The Buffalo music scene
  • Their origins
  • John and Bon Jovi sharing a similar haircut

On top of that, there are a few reveals here that are worth analyzing.

Firstly, it is claimed that the first incarnation of the Goo Goo Dolls, or should I say Sex Maggots, actually featured a female keyboard player, hence it was a four-member band rather than their classic three-member formation. It sounds like the girl only took part to a few rehearsal sessions before quitting the band.

Another bit of info I wasn’t aware about until now has to do with Paul Westerberg and his collaboration with the band on the famous single “We Are The Normal“. Apparently, initially Paul opted not to be included in the official song credits, but after listening to a final version of the track, he decided to have his name credited.

Furthermore, another curious insight. When asked about what the title of the album is about, both John and Robby point to George for the answer. My interpretation is that he was the main reason behind the name of the record, and possibly other things related to its conception (such as, maybe the album cover?). Either way, the reason why that title was chosen was actually very simple. George himself explains:

We used to drive by the car wash often, and as we were talking about how to name our new record, we decided to call it just like that car washing business we would repeatedly encounter.

George Tutuska

And also, another very interesting thing I never knew about. We all know “Fallin’ Down” became the second single off “Superstar Car Wash”, mainly because the song also contributed to the “Son In Law” movie soundtrack in the same year the album was released. Here, Robby reveals that at one point “Cuz You’re Gone” was also being considered as a possible second single to promote the album, and there had been a push between the two songs. Ultimately, the former was chosen.
