A collection of pictures from when band members were young

Today I received some pictures from contributor Bailey. My impression is that most of these had been featured in the VH1 documentary about the band’s origins which aired many years ago on live TV.

There are also a couple of takes I don’t think I’ve seen before, but might be wrong.

Bailey also sent out a description for each of the photos she forwarded. I will let her do the talking, and simply add that I hope other readers will take example from her and be inspired to share their stuff with us, and as a consequence, with the rest of the community.

Thanks again Bailey for the material.

Quick reminder: If you’re looking for pictures, don’t forget to check out the Picture category within this blog, which features all of the posts containing photos of the band and of other characters which were/are close to them.

The first two I attached are of Mike. They’re his senior pictures taken in 1985.

The second two are of John in his Sunday best (I’m assuming) and I did a close up and a zoom out because the zoom out was kind of blurry. I’d say those are circa 1981.

Then there are two with John and his dad. The second one (titled JOHNANDDAD) was taken when John was eight. I meant to send this one with the others I sent back in January I think, but I completely forgot about it. The other one was taken around that time, I believe.

The one with just John as a kid was taken in 1974 I believe, so he was also eight or nine.

The last one is John playing his guitar, circa 1979.

Ok, now the pictures from 1987 and 1993:
The first one depicts John, Robby and George surrounded by dozens of beer bottles. That one is from 1987. Also, the ad for a show at “Sinbad’s” is from ’87 or ’88.

The one of John and Robby is from a photoshoot in 1986, which I think was the “bargain 8x10s” they were using to try to get a record deal. I would love it if someone knew where the rest of the photoshoot was, or if they had more pictures from it. This unfortunately is the only one I have.

The one from 1993 is of John, perhaps during a live performance. I think there was more to the picture, but that’s also all I have.

Lastly, two more pictures for when John and Robby were teenagers. Bailey did not include a specific comment for these ones. First take is John, most likely photographed at his own old house. The other picture depicts Robby while he was playing for his band The Monarchs, right before John joined him in 1985 to form the Goo Goo Dolls.

  1. I did forget to comment on the last two. The one of John as a teen is from 1980-81 at his house (which you did mention) maybe getting a snack? Making dinner? He is holding a can of beans though. I wonder if one of his sisters shot the picture when he wasn’t expecting it.
I think the one of Robby is around that time as well. That is when he was in the Monarchs, and that one is from the VH1 (hence the watermark)–he commented in the video saying he would play music for the school dances in highschool with his band–they were a cover band, so I think that’s what they were doing. I don’t remember if I commented on that one or not, but if I did, there’s some more info.
Also, I did see that George and Laurie have been the most popular people on the blog, and I’m proud to have contributed to that (the “John speaks out about Laurie ’96 and ’00” for those who are wondering)
