A Never-Before-Seen Performance Of “Eyes Wide Open” (1996)

Contributor Bailey shared with us a couple of YouTube links today. We already talked about the first one, and it’s now time to discuss the other little gem she provided us with.

This one actually caught me a bit off guard. Firstly, let’s see what Bailey has to say about it:

I couldn’t wait to share this amazing find with you. This Goo fan I mentioned in my past email, Oceans of Color posted another super rare performance of Eyes Wide Open and wow I’d never seen it before!

She’s been posting a lot of 1998/99 content, and now something she assumes is from 1996. I also suggested she upload her content to archive.org (which I’ve been doing and all fans should do if they have anything to save).

Have a Gooey day,

Bailey

Now, I knew the band did play “Eyes Wide Open” on live TV in one occasion, that is at the Conan O’Brien show in 1995 (which we discussed here). I thought that was a one-time event as John et al. probably got tired of playing on TV always the same “A Boy Named Goo” songs and wanted to delight the audience with another tune off of their then-newest album. Looking at this other TV performance, this time taken at a show titled “Friday Night” one year later, makes me speculate whether or not the band at some point had decided to release it as a single. In the end, “Eyes Wide Open” did not become one, but it certainly would have made a great impression on the radio listeners of that era if things had ended up differently.

Anyhow, here we go. Enjoy this very rare live take by watching the video below.

Thanks Bailey and the original upload for this great material.
