We detach from older Goo Goo Dolls releases with another concert forwarded to us by contributor Ryne. This time, we can enjoy a full show recorded during the “Boxes” tour which took place in ever-sunny Texas.
This September 8th, 2016 concert is actually a nice surprise because it features a couple of old songs the band, for whatever reason, decided to put back into their standard set list for that year. In fact, both “Already There” and “Never Take The Place Of Your Man” had been shelved from live performances for more than a decade before finally resurfacing into the light of the crowd. Furthermore, 2016 was also the last year they have been played before being shelved again (maybe for good?).
Anyhow, Ryne has some thoughts to share about this release, which in a way represents an important step into his own personal relationship with the band:
I think for this release I’ll give you guys something that i have a personal attachment to. I have an Audio-Only Bootleg from the Boxes tour, Back in 2016.
Today we feature the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion show from September 2016.
When I first joined this Temple, I mentioned in my introduction that i first saw the GGDs live during their Boxes tour in 2016. I had seen the GGDs for the first time at the Hard Rock in Orlando, Which took place just over a week prior to this particular show that I’m giving you this bootleg of.
The setlist, As i think you’ll notice, Was a fairly nice mixture of (then)-New and Old. While it does feature fan favorites like ‘Long Way Down’ from ABNG, It does also feature a cover of ‘Never take the place of your man’. As Prince had passed away earlier in 2016, And the band had played this cover many times before, It was certainly quite the addition to the set.
In terms of the Bootleg itself: While the audio does have periods where it seems to get slightly muffled, Which probably indicates an audience recording rather than Soundboard, I’d say It is at least Fair.
Otherwise i think this is a fairly enjoyable performance. ๐
The bootleg is presented as a single .mp3 file comprising of the entire show. Quality-wise there is muffling like Ryan wrote, especially in some parts of the performance which are rendered quite hard to listen to. Overall, I’d say it’s still quite listenable but don’t expect the best audio cleanness out there.
