Live At The Allentown Fairgrounds, Allentown, PA (1996)

The next release from contributor Ryne is yet another concert from the “A Boy Named Goo” tour. This time, we can enjoy a full video performance of the show. The latter even comes with a little surprise.

On August 30th, 1996 the Goo Goo Dolls were in Philadelphia, specifically at the Allentown Fairgrounds. According to my research, this was their last Summer of 1996’s performance before taking a break for a few weeks, after which they resumed another leg of the tour in late September. In a way, this concert is also pretty unique for another reason. Let’s hear what Ryne has to say about it:

Hey Folks! How would you like to go back to the Boy Named Goo tour with a Video/VHS rip?

This one comes from 1996 in Allentown, PA, At the great Allentown Fairgrounds. I have seen some Goo Fans from PA, So I figured they might like this one.

This was certainly one of the Band’s more energized shows of the year.

It seems for this particular performance, The band played quite a large number of songs from ABNG, And only a few others. ‘We are the normal’ being one of the noteworthy others on the Setlist for this show.

In terms of Quality, Audio is Decent. Video, Being a VHS rip and all, May have some fuzziness or occasional out-of-focus moments. But otherwise watchable, I would say.

Hope you like this one. 🙂

Another aspect I should mention is that the concert features one of the very few live takes the band ever did for “Disconnected“. I am a bit skeptical about the claim made in the link I just attached above, which says the first time they played that tune live was in 1991. Anyhow, what is certain is that John et al. only played that cover song for a small number of times before completely discarding it from their live set lists from 1998 onward. Make sure to listen to it, because it is a pretty rare one.

Like Ryne said, I found the audio quality to be pretty Ok-ish, while the video a bit out of focus given the fact it was shot from a distance and with old technology. Overall, the release is quite watchable and enjoyable. Furthermore, the performance is great. The only flaw I could find is a few seconds from the beginning of “Fallin’ Down” actually being cut off.

The file itself is obviously a VHS rip encoded with the standardized 640x480p format.

  1. I completely forgot to mention that cut-off part. Lol. Its funny when i often pay more attention to the Quality of a video, This one time i forget a detail.

Oh well, I did once say you don’t usually get a perfect release, In terms of video or audio.

  2. Also, i do actually have proof that they played Disconnected back in 1991. I even have an audio-only release on file. 🙂

    1. I see. I thought it was a typo. Good to know they had been eyeing that song for some years before actually recording a cover for it. Please add it to your next releases whenever you can.

  3. the first performance of Disconnected (at least that I know of) was filmed here by Rick Scullion

I really like this whole show, which ALSO had a really early performance of Cuz You’re Gone which started the whole theory on the Temple about how Cuz was probably written back in 1991, or even as far as 1990.
I know that the Dolls were eyeing Disconnected as a possible cover for years before actually using it, as you can see here. Man they really pulled it off! Didn’t change the sound of the cover much over the years either which is really crazy
