Johnny’s Halfcaster is in “108 Rockstar Guitars” / Goofy Goo (1988/1995/1996)

Today we share a couple of great finds from contributor Bailey, including trivia on one of John Rzeznik’s most intriguing guitars from his personal collection.

Bailey has sent us a couple of emails recently. The first one is about the Halfcaster, one of John’s guitars we have discussed in the past. Let’s hear it directly from her:

Hello! I’ve got something pretty neat to share today, having to do with one of Johnny’s most iconic guitars: the Halfcaster.

The story of this unique guitar was explained during VH1 storytellers. As it goes, John destroyed his guitar, then later had his guitar tech sand off the rough edges so he wouldn’t get splinters when playing. Then…it became the Halfcaster.

This was the picture of the guitar featured in 108 Rockstar Guitars. I also heard that one of Robby’s guitars was featured in there as well, but so far I haven’t been able to find a picture of it anywhere. If you’ve got a picture of it from said guitar book, I’d love to see it!

Cheers

Bailey

Bailey also forwarded a collection of photos which we titled “Goofy Goo”. Some of these have already been posted on the blog, while others are new to our archive. They seem to date from the years 1988, 1995 and 1996.

Hi! I’ve added some new pictures to my collection, and you’re really going to like them! Prepare yourself for Goo at it’s funniest:

Tired in Style! This first one is one of my favorites. I mean isn’t it just so adorable? I’ve been looking for this particular picture ever since I got “Ego” since a cropped version of this was featured in the insert. This is 1988, in the Van Days.

And now, Pose! Backstage before their lovely performance at Club Hell (including beer dumping, head banging and breaking ceiling panels over heads), John and Robby pose for a picture. Geez Rzeznik was skinny back then!

Johnny and Robby Goo (and the odd orange jacket). It’s just the jacket that makes this funny. And they look so casual! This was when they were presenting the award to Michael Jackson back in ‘96.

Scary John. This made me laugh for five minutes straight. Woah, his eyes almost look grey here. The comment on the picture when I found it was “Original nose, original teeth”. Well, not his original nose but original teeth with the cute little gap.

Robby! I don’t think my title needed much more than that, lol! (I was really tired when I found this picture, so it was also very very funny)

Side-eyeing John. Who is Johnny looking at? This must be from an interview sometime during 1995. No idea there, but it’s a funny picture.

Men never age. It took me a second to realize what they were doing. That’s right—they put tape on their noses to make ‘em look like pigs, lol! (Seriously, who didn’t do that as a kid?)

Cheers to whoever made this.

The 1988 tour at its finest. I mean, this isn’t really a “funny” picture, but it’s one I’ve been looking for for a long long time, so hey, it’s worth the add! I know you love old pictures, Temple of Goo, so here’s your Goo Easter Egg for today!

Cheers from the States,

Bailey
