Live At Club Hell (The Rooftop Version), 1987

I know you’ve all been craving for another Mr. Sean Hampson‘s release… So here it is. Patience pays off.

First and foremost, the show I am posting today is already present on YouTube. However, the version Sean forwarded me is a bit different as it contains a never-seen-before clip at the end. As usual, do not forget to browse Sean’s category to find out which releases you’ve missed on.

I always give credits when due. This concert was originally uploaded by YouTube user Rolling Rockvideos. You can watch their version below.

The one Sean provided me includes an additional few seconds, featuring the band goofing around on the club’s rooftop. I’ve never seen that clip anywhere, so this is probably the first time it is being uploaded on a streaming platform. It’s also hard to make out what they’re doing, as it was filmed at night. That is why I renamed this edition “The Rooftop Version”.

In terms of the concert itself, you are experiencing one of the first shows the band performed under the moniker Goo Goo Dolls (they were the Sex Maggots mere months earlier). What stands out here is the way the performance took place, with the band playing energetically just mere inches from the crowd as they occasionally sip beep, while the attendees often join them on “stage”, interact with John and Robby, talk to them, even hug and touch them in a friendly, jokingly way. We also get former manager Artie Kwitchoff being invited to introduce to very song dedicated to him, “Artie“. This closeness with the crowd is something we seldom get to experience in our modern times.

I couldn’t find a setlist.fm entry for this, hence I cannot provide a location (It should be Buffalo, NY, but I’m not 100% certain about it) nor a specific date, except for the year it took place in.

Furthermore, I couldn’t identify the last song they played. It is certainly a cover, which comes along with two other they never officially recorded: “Born To Be Wild” and “Ballroom Blitz“. UPDATE: According to a user, it may actually be “Humble Me“, the original version of the song “Em Elbmuh” which appears on “Jed”.

In terms of audio quality, not the greatest. Conversely, video is great despite its age. I was surprised to realize how clear it looks. This is a VHS rip (analog-to-digital) encoded at 480p.

Again, you want to thank Sean for another marvelous release. I just make his stuff publicly available. Below you can find the covers he personally created for this release.

You can watch the concert below. Download links are provided at the end of this post.

UPDATE: According to user Kevin, the last song is the original version of “Humble Me (Em Elbmuh)” from the band’s first demo tape.
