Live At The Tonight Show With Jay Leno (Baby Love / Broadway) [2000]

The next release from contributor Christina is actually comprised of two separate clips: a funny cover of an old Diana Ross & The Supremes song, and one of the best live takes for “Broadway” you will ever hear.

It is no secret that the Goo Goo Dolls took part to a good number of The Tonight Show episodes, hosted by Jay Leno, ever since “A Boy Named Goo” was released. We have already shared a couple of them here, such as:

Today we add some more to our ever-growing archive. First and foremost, let’s see what Christina has to say about them:

I believe these were from the same episode or were at least filmed on the same day, since the band are wearing the same outfits in both. You’ve shared the audio for “Baby Love” before but the video seems to have vanished from the internet, so here it is for posterity. I have no idea what the context was for this but it is pretty funny. (“Broadway” is already on YouTube a couple of times, so I don’t have much new to add on that one.)

Baby Love” is a cover, like I explained above, and in the video clip you will get to see John dressed up like the amazing Diana Ross as the band performs a less-than-30-seconds punk rock version of the original song.

The live take for “Broadway” is certainly a very good one and I’m sure most of you have already seen it / listened to it. Nevertheless, I think it would be a good idea to add it to our vault, because with those YouTube videos you never know: one day they’re there, the next one they are MIA.

As far as the quality of the video clips is concerned, they are your typical VHS rips which come with the standardized 640x480p encoding. The short clip’s quality is not the greatest but still watchable, while the longer one offers better imagery indeed. As a reminder, when it comes to VHS rips, aiming for visual pleasure is not an easy task, considering how old and obsolete the whole format has become when compared to today’s standards.

Christina sent us two separate clips. In the download sections, I have included both the two files she originally forwarded plus the unified one, which features the two performances assembled into a single file. To create the latter I used a specific program which enables users to merge videos in a lossless way, so don’t worry about the fact it is doctored. Not even a single bit of quality was lost during the process.
